Car Hire

Car hire

By now you will have bought your air tickets, and you’re all hyped up about your coming trip. One thing you may not have thought about though is how you’re going to get around at your destination. There is no doubt that the most convenient way of getting around is by car hire. The great thing about car hire is that you are not tied down to specific times. Buses and trains are all committed to run to a schedule, but using care hire – well, you’re your own boss. You can come and go as you please. One thing to remember though, you have to be at least 23 to hire a car, and there is a surcharge for younger drivers. You can use our online booking system to look for the best deal without even leaving home. Click on the link below, enter the pick-up and drop-off dates and locations and let our search engine give you a selection of vehicles available.

Car Hire Tips

In order to make sure that you have a trouble-free trip you should book your hire car well in advance. You’re likely to get a better rate than if you book over the counter. Complete as much of the car hire organization as you can before your trip – it’s likely to save you money in the long run.

When you book, be sure to ask about specials, late penalties and fuel charges. Some additional costs are not explained unless you ask, including if you chip the windscreen or puncture a tyre.

Save money by making sure you return the car on time. Even if you are a few minutes late you could end up having to pay for an extra day.

Get yourself an International Driving Permit or IDP before you set out. This entitles you to drive the motor vehicles specified in the permit - in all participating countries. An IDP can be used for photo ID and must be accompanied by a valid South African Driver's Licence at all times. In South Africa the only authority that issues permits is the Automobile Association.

To get an IDP simply visit your nearest Automobile Association shop with your current Driver's Licence and a recent passport-size photo.

An IDP is valid for 12 months from the date of issue unless your domestic licence expires. IDPs cannot be issued to people under 18 years of age. They also cannot be issued to holders of Learner Licenses or other restricted use licenses. Find out about travel insurance before you depart.
