Backpacking through Asia

I will never forget the first time I set foot in Asia – in my particular case it was in Singapore. The Frangipanis were in full bloom, their perfume lingering in the humid air. Sitting at a street side stall and eating Nasi Goring, this was the nearest place to Heaven I had ever visited. Backpacking through Asia has become a very popular pastime, especially among the students during their gap year. Perhaps a few tips are warranted for those considering a backpacking tour through Asia. The first and by far the most important tip is to think small – especially when packing that haversack. Lay out all of the things that you think that you’ll need and put at least half of them back in the cupboard. All you’ll need to take must fit into one backpack and a small daypack. So forget those expensive hiking boots – just take a pair of flip-flops.

If you’re backpacking through Asia then forget about taking either a laptop or an expensive camera. Firstly they become cumbersome and heavy and secondly they are desirable items, if you know what I mean. You can always spend time in an Internet café, of which there are plenty. Don’t take any clothes that you would be uncomfortable wearing at home – stick to comfort. If you have a sarong, pack one. If not put it on the top of your list of things to buy when backpacking through Asia. Don’t take more than a couple of books, and do make sure that they’re paperbacks. You’ll find plenty of book exchanges dotted about, and books are heavy. Enjoy your trip.

• We will better the price by R20 on domestic airfares and R50 on international airfares.
