Holiday volunteer work

More and more young people are filling in their gap year with holiday volunteer work these days. What exactly is it? Well, all you need do is to carry out a Google search for “gap year travel” or “volunteer tour” and you’ll be inundated with hits from projects and organizations looking for young people just like yourself to do holiday volunteer work in fields such as nature conservation, humanitarian assistance and even projects like lion rehabilitation programs. You could even find yourself working on the Australian Great Barrier Reef. Projects vary, and if holiday volunteer work is really what you want to do, you will probably have to pay for the privilege. A project working with wildlife will probably cost you twice as much as a humanitarian project somewhere in Asia, and this is almost entirely due to the high demand for the former. That does not mean to say that either of the projects is any more or less worthwhile than the other. 

The accommodation you get with holiday volunteer work is going to vary from place to place, and we would always advise you to find out exactly what to expect before you commit yourself. You could find yourself living in very humbling surroundings, but on the other hand could end up with a very comfortable room. If holiday volunteer work is not exactly what you’re looking for and you would rather earn a little spending money, rather opt for one of the jobs that you’ll find under our “working holidays” tab. • Applies to genuine quotes in South African Rand from airlines and South African registered businesses and websites for travel that originates/departs from South Africa.
• Detailed quote must be in writing, must be inclusive of all fees such as taxes, surcharges and service fees and must be presented to us prior to booking.
• Fare must be available and able to be booked by the general public when you bring it to us.
• Fares available due to membership of a group or corporate entity or subscription to a closed group are excluded.
• We may offer you an alternative date/airline to get you the best price, but should you be less flexible we guarantee to better whatever you bring us – apples for apples.
• We will better the price by R20 on domestic airfares and R50 on international airfares.
