Johannesburg

Johannesburg, known as the ‘city of gold’ because of the valuable minerals the land consists off.  Unlike all the other major cities, Johannesburg is inland, has no beaches.  This cosmopolitan city has lots to offer from flea markets, museums, gardens & parks, malls & more.

  • Newtown – well known for its street names, which force one to reminisce or learn more about South Africa’s musical history.  Famous streets named after music legends include; Miriam Makeba, Dolly Rathebe, Gwigwi Mrwebi and Margaret Mcingana amongst many.
Newtown hosts the Market Theatre also known as the “Theatre of the Struggle” still operates & many major productions have been performed there.
  • Soweto – a township that made its debut from the times of apartheid. ‘Must see places’ at this township?  Hector Peterson Square which was named after the first students to be killed in the 1976 saga.  Nelson Mandela’s house, this is where former president of South Africa Nelson Mandela resided during the 1950’s with his then wife Winnie Madikizela Mandela.
  • South African National Museum of Military History – this museum showcases all types of guns, armored cars and a submarine said to have been used in the Second World War by the Germans.
