Youth hostels

If you’re young and planning a trip overseas, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with using youth hostels as your main form of accommodation. Youth hostels are completely different from hotels, which tend to be rather unfriendly and places where you get to meet no one. So what’s so marvellous about hostels then? Well, for a start they’re much cheaper than hotels – maybe a quarter of the price or even less. The only disadvantage, if you can call it that, is that you will probably get to sleep in a dormitory and/or bunk beds, though if you’re prepared to pay a little extra some youth hostels do have private rooms with en-suite bathrooms. You will find plenty of opportunities of mixing with other guests, and they’ll all be of a similar age to yourself. Some hostels actually organize parties to get people to mix together. Some even have a bar where you can meet fellow guests.

You’ll often get to meet people in youth hostels who have very b opinions about some subjects that others find taboo. Subjects like politics, religion, sex or even South Africa – if you happen to get into such a discussion try to avoid having over-b opinions. Be ready to either be broadminded or to accept that some people may not harbour the same views as yourself. To summarise, when you stay in youth hostels you can expect to make new friends and they’ll most likely be from a country thousands of miles away from your own. Some of the best friendships out have been the result of a chance meeting at a hostel.

• Applies to genuine quotes in South African Rand from airlines and South African registered businesses and websites for travel that originates/departs from South Africa.
• Detailed quote must be in writing, must be inclusive of all fees such as taxes, surcharges and service fees and must be presented to us prior to booking.
• Fare must be available and able to be booked by the general public when you bring it to us.
• Fares available due to membership of a group or corporate entity or subscription to a closed group are excluded.
• We may offer you an alternative date/airline to get you the best price, but should you be less flexible we guarantee to better whatever you bring us – apples for apples.
• We will better the price by R20 on domestic airfares and R50 on international airfares.
