Areas of Bangkok
Sampeng & Phahurat:
Bangkok's oldest residential and business district. It's a fascinating area to explore if you don't mind navigating the narrow and often congested streets. Although buses and taxis are abundantly available, it's an area best seen on foot.
Chinatown:
One of the most fascinating districts in Bangkok. It's noisy and exhilarating. It's an area of dark laneways and traffic-choked roads, of bright, cheap markets and enticing food stalls Chinatown offers the visitor an astonishing array of jewellery, hardware, wholesale food, and automotive and fabric shops - nearly always at cheaper prices than anywhere else in Bangkok.
Phahurat:
On the edge of Chinatown, Phahurat has a wide variety of Indian goods available in this small area, ranging from an astonishing array of silks to Thai shoulder bags. If you're not much of a wheeler and dealer head down any of the little alleys into the 'bowels' of this area for a relatively more sedate experience. You'll find foodstuffs, household items and a thriving culture that might ordinarily pass by unnoticed.
