| Different Types of Camps: |
| Camps have been going for hundreds of years in the US and are a North American tradition. Each year millions of children aged 6 to 16 from all over the US look forward to spending anywhere between 1 to 9 weeks at a summer camp. It's their time to break loose - to enjoy themselves, have fun, make friends, try cool new things and get looked after by a lot of people with funny accents!! Life at camp is intense - it's hard work, and in a very short space of time camp becomes your world...and each world is different, because each camp is different. |
| Private camps are the flagships of the great American summer camp tradition. Many have been around a long time and these camps are generally family owned and cater to children from high-income families - in short this is where the money is!! |
| Agency/non-profit camps offer a chance for a truly unique and rewarding experience. Generally agencies are charitable and run camps to support children from either their local area or from a background related to the agencies area of fundraising. Some agencies are national (for example YMCA, 4-H or Boys and Girls Clubs) whilst others may be run by more local, independent charities (for example Lions Clubs, Round Tables or Lodges). |
| Specialist Camps: |
| Certain camps we work with have one particular area of interest that they concentrate on such as tennis, gymnastics or drama. Generally these camps are privately owned and although other activities take place on these camps, the main focus of the programming is the specialist skill. |
| Special Needs Camps: |
| Anyone who has volunteered before will tell you that the feeling you get when you know you're truly helping someone is unrivalled and a placement on a special needs camps offers one of the most unique and rewarding experiences you can have. Typically special needs camps cater to campers who have a variety of needs - from learning to emotional needs from physical to mental disabilities. |
| Faith-based Camps offer campers from Christian or Jewish backgrounds the best of both worlds - the chance to enjoy all the activities found at traditional camps, but with time spent incorporating their faith. There are generally 2 types of faith camp. Some are 'faith-lite' (for example YMCA camps) - where the focus is fully on the giving the kids a great summer experience and not on religion. On other camps, faith will play a strong central role that serves to unite the camp's community, with services and faith studies comprising a big part of day-to-day life on the camp. |
