Highly Skilled Tier 1 (General) Migrant Information Pack |
| What is the Tier 1 (General) Migrant Category? |
The programme is designed to allow highly skilled people to migrate to the United Kingdom to pursue work or self employment opportunities. It is a points based immigration scheme, where points are scored from 6 main categories:
- Age
- Educational qualifications
- Past earnings
- Earnings gained in UK/Qualification gained in UK
- English language proficiency
- Self-maintenance requirement

| How is the Tier 1 (General) Migrant Category assessed? |
The Tier 1 (General) Migrant Category is assessed against the criteria mentioned above and you will need to score a minimum of 95 points to qualify for this visa category (see reverse). To avoid unnecessary delay and expensive failure, it is important that you identify which criteria you are able to apply under before making an application.
| Why the Tier 1 (General) Migrant Category is a recommended option? |
- The Tier 1 (General) Migrant Category is different from the work permit scheme because you do not need a specific job offer in the UK to apply. This gives you the freedom to make the most of your employment opportunities whilst in the UK without being restricted to a specific employer.
-
Unlike certain visas e.g. working holiday and student visas, the Tier 1 (General) Migrant Category is a settlement visa which entitles you to apply for Permanent Residency and later British nationality, after a qualifying period.
-
Employers look more favourably on candidates holding a Tier 1 (General) Migrant Category as it's a settlement visa and has no working restrictions, unlike working holiday and student visas.
- Unlike certain visa options the Tier 1 (General) Migrant Category allows you to be self-employed.
- It is also different from business routes such as the Innovators scheme or other business categories because you don't need a detailed business plan; you do not need to create jobs; and you don't need to invest in the UK - you simply need to meet the point's criteria.

| Interesting fact regarding the eligibility criteria: 'past earnings' |
One of the eligibility criteria for the Tier 1 (General) Migrant Category is "past earnings". The individual's income for any consecutive 12 month period, within the last 15 months prior to the application date, will need to be considered.
Where the individual has been living and working abroad for the majority of the 12 month period their foreign income will be converted to UK currency and a predetermined multiplier will be applied to the foreign earnings dependent on the country they were earned in.
For countries like South Africa and New Zealand the multiplier applied is quite favourable and it therefore may be in the applicant's best interest to apply for the Tier 1 (General) Migrant Category before arrival in the UK if their earnings from home qualify them.
